Why “Adapt” Matters at Work
Change is a regular part of work, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Whether it’s a new process, a changing workload, a team restructure, or shifting expectations, workplace changes often leave employees feeling reactive, frustrated, or unsure of where to focus their energy.
Adaptability is the skill that helps employees respond to change without feeling like they are constantly playing catch-up. It’s about staying open to new information, adjusting plans when needed, and finding productive ways forward. When employees have space to clarify what still matters to them, adjust how they work, and name what support they need, change becomes more manageable.
September offers an opportune moment to practice this mindset. With people transitioning into new routines after the summer and the busy months ahead, taking time to adapt can help employees feel more prepared, resilient, and supported as they move forward.
Bringing the Theme to Life
🧭 Clarify What Still Matters: During times of change, encourage teams to take a step back and identify their most important priorities and values. Having a clear sense of what remains constant can make it easier to adjust to new circumstances.
🔄 Review What Needs to Change: Use September as a checkpoint to look at workflows, expectations, and team habits. Ask what still works, what no longer fits, and what needs to be adjusted for the months ahead.
💬 Talk About What Would Help: Encourage managers to have open conversations about what employees need to adjust to change successfully. This might include clearer expectations, additional training, more time, extra support, or help managing competing priorities.
⏸️ Make Time to Reflect: Encourage individuals and teams to pause and think about how things are going. Taking time to notice what is working, what is challenging, and what may need to change can help people adjust more effectively and make thoughtful decisions.
